The Union Spartans traveled to West Bladen Friday night for their first conference game of the second half of the season. The JV teams took the court first, and battled it out for the win. In the end, it was the Knights who came out victorious, 52-26.
West Bladen jumped out with a slight lead in the first, 8-7, and managed to hold that lead the entire first half. The halftime score was 19-12, Union trailing behind. The young Spartans scored 14 points in the second half, but couldn’t catch up to the Knights, who scored 33 points of their own. The final outcome was a West Bladen victory, 49-33.
Leading scorers for Union were Shyquan Brunson with 7 points, Carter Spearman with 6 points, Chris Nash with 6 points.
Bryant Register, Union’s head coach, said, “We started off good in the first half, but came out kind of flat in the second. We had a lot of turnovers in the second half. However, I’m proud of our boys and the effort they had tonight. We’ll get back to work Monday to prepare for Trask Tuesday.”
The Lady Spartans faced off with the Lady Knights in the next match up. The two teams fought hard throughout the game, but it was West Bladen who pulled out the win, 49-33.
In the first quarter, things were slow to start, Union scoring 11 and West Bladen with 20. The Knights maintained this lead in the second, leaving for the locker rooms with a halftime score of 28-15. The Knights added 21 points to their score in the second half, only slightly outdoing the Spartans’ 18 points. Though they battled hard, the Lady Spartans fell to the Knights, 33-49.
Head Coach for Union, Bryant Register, said, “I want to congratulate West Bladen on their win tonight, it was a well fought game. I am very proud of the way our girls played tonight. They played with great effort and intensity. I hope this effort carries over as we prepare for Trask next week,”
Leading scorers for the Lady Spartans were Lauren Preddy with 7 points, Eva Long with 7 points, Destiny Robinson with 6 points.
Both the JV and Lady Spartans will be facing Trask in conference play Tuesday at Union High School.
