The Union Spartans hosted the Pender Patriots in a conference match up Friday night. Things got started with the JV teams, who went toe to toe in a tight game. In the end, it was the young Spartans who came out with the victory, 53-46.
Pender jumped out with 13 points in the first, and Union trailed behind with 6 points. However, the game began to heat up in the second, with both teams finding the basket more frequently. At the sound of the halftime buzzer, Pender was ahead, 25-20. After a trip to the locker room, the Spartans came back to the court fired up, leading to an addition of 17 points to their score. The Patriots were down 36-37 as the third quarter ended. Powering through in the fourth, the JV Spartans pushed pass the Patriots to win the ballgame, 53-46.
Leading scorers for Union were Chris Nash and CJ Thornton with 14 points each. They were assisted by Donovan Hayes with 8 points and Nadier Goodwin with 6 points.
Spartan Head Coach Bryant Register said, “First off I want to congratulate Pender on a great game tonight. This is such a huge win for us being we’ve been struggling lately, We switched things up tonight and went with a different line up hoping for a spark. It didn’t start off too well, but I’m so proud of this team for the way they battled tonight. We made a big run at them in the third to put us ahead and made some big free-throws in the fourth to hold on to that lead. Tonight was an overall great win for us.”
Union will travel to Wallace Saturday for a make up conference game.
