August 17, 2014, marked Harrells Christian Academy’s seventh year holding the annual Senior Blessing Ceremony. All of the excited seniors waited patiently as they were called on stage one by one to stand beside their “senior blesser” and receiver their senior blessing. Each “blesser” shared words of encouragement for their “blessees” and positive remarks about them. The seniors smiled and listened intently, excited that the first of many HCA senior class traditions had begun.
Senior blessers are HCA faculty members who are individually selected by 12th-grade students. Aside from bestowing a blessing upon the seniors at the special Senior Blessing ceremony, these blessers will do special things for their blessees throughout the year. They will pray for them, encourage them, and surprise them periodically with little treats such as their favorite snacks, candy, and gift cards. The blessers will also be available to offer advice and help with challenges the seniors may face during the school year.
HCA seniors have been waiting to be a part of this tradition since they were wandering the hallways as freshmen. Anne Baker Bryant, a 12th-grader who has attended Harrells since kindergarten, remarked “It is a wonderful tradition we have at HCA. At the ceremony, I loved hearing what each blesser had to say about each of my classmates and me. It also made me very emotional.”
Bryant was not the only one in attendance who became a little emotional during the ceremony. Students, parents, and faculty members alike were touched by all of the inspiring words and the thoughts of the upcoming journey each senior will be taking. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Class of 2015 said they felt blessed and prepared to begin their final year at Harrells Christian Academy.
