On Jan. 19, an Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held at Mintz Baptist Church for Dylan Frank Powell, of Clinton. Dylan was presented his Eagle Scout rank by Scoutmaster Jay Faison of Clinton. Dylan is an active member of Troop 27 which is sponsored by Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church. He is currently a junior at Union High School and is the son of Frank and Marleen Powell.

A large part of the Court of Honor was the Four Winds Ceremony, which was performed by the ToReWaWaKen Chapter Ceremony Team of which Dylan is a current member. The Four Winds Ceremony is performed appropriately when the Eagle Candidate is an active member of the Order of the Arrow. The ToReWaWaKen Chapter Ceremony Team members performing during this special part of the ceremony were Samuel Wells, Brandon Maldonado, Ian Padgett, Hunter Hathaway and Stephen Carroll. Mr. Michael Padgett of Pink Hill is the advisor for the team and served as Dylan’s escort.

During the ceremony, Dylan presented Eagle Mom & Eagle Dad pins to his parents. He also chose to honor Coach David Knowles with the Eagle Mentor Pin, acknowledging the impact that Coach Knowles has made on his life.

Dylan joined Cub Scouts in 2003, worked through the Cub Scout ranks of Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos, and crossed over into Boy Scouts in the spring of 2008. While moving through the Boy Scout ranks of Scout, Tenderfoot, 2nd Class, 1st Class, Star and Life, he served two terms as Senior Patrol Leader as well as other positions of leadership within the troop. Before earning his Eagle Rank, Dylan earned 40 merit badges, 12 of which were eagle-required badges. He completed his Eagle Board of Review on October 3, 2013.

Among the several requirements that must be completed to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, the most prominent requirement is the planning and completion of an Eagle Scout Project. Mr. Michael McLamb served as a project mentor to Dylan during this project. Dylan’s chosen project was to erect three flag poles at Mintz Christian Academy located in Roseboro. These flag poles are home to the U.S. Flag, the North Carolina Flag and the Christian Flag. On September 28, 2013 a flag dedication service was held to dedicate these flag poles in memory of Grover S. Vinson and in honor of Velma Vinson, A.F. and Judy Powell, all grandparents of Dylan. Joy McDowell, principal of Mintz Christian Academy, was presented a check for the remaining project funds to be used as deemed necessary for the school.

Dylan has held the position of Chapter Chief for the ToReWaWaKen Chapter of Order of the Arrow, which serves the Coharie District. He currently holds the position of Lodge Chief of Nayawin RaR Lodge, which serves the Tuscarora Council.

This summer Dylan will be attending the Canadian Odyssey Trek of the Northern Tier High Adventure at Charles L Sommers Base Camp in Ely, Minnesota. Northern Tier offers wilderness expeditions in Northern Minnesota and Northwestern Ontario, Canada. While attending, he will be working along with fellow OA Scouts to clean and improve portaging trails and maintain waterways.
