The Lakewood FFA Chapter competed in the 2014 District 4 Youth Hunter Education Safety Skills Tournament on Tuesday, March 25 and earned a second place finish, advancing them to the skills tournament later this month.


The event was held at the Coharie Shooting League facility near Clinton. Lakewood placed second in the 22 Caliber Rifle competition. Lakewood also placed second overall in the tournament. The team will now advance to the NC Hunter Skills State Youth Tournament on April 26 which will be held at Millstone 4H Camp near Ellerbe. The district and state tournaments are held by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission


Schools are eligible to enter the district tournaments based on the fact that Hunter Education Safety Courses are offered as part of the agriculture aurriculum. Students compete for safety and marksmanship in 4 different areas. The four areas are rifle, shotgun, archery as well as a challenging orienteering course accompanied by a hunter educations safety/wildlife test.
