‘Dixie Swim Club’ gets new cast members
Dr. Bruce Caldwell Contributing columnist
Rehearsals for “Dixie Swim Club” are under way although there have been some last minute cast changes due to scheduling difficulties.
The current five ladies snagging a role in the play are Sandra Clifton, Gretta Steffens, Janet Rawls, Olivia Bass and Sarah Burton.
Sarah is the new drama teacher at Clinton High School having moved from Wilmington where she had taught drama at New Hanover High for many years. Her family moved to Wilmingtom from Greensboro when she was 13. She graduated from New Hanover High and obtained a BA degree from UNC-W and her teacher’s certification from UNC-G in theater and speech. She has an extensive history in the performing arts having acted in “West Side Story” while in college; as production stage manager for UNC-G Summer Repertory Theater as well as the costume department at UNC-G; worked backstage and on different shows at Thalian Hall and other venues in Wilmington; and has spent hours and hours helping New Hanover High students build sets, costuming and directing them in many and varied shows. So, as you can see Sarah is not a stranger to the stage, and director Kathy Day feels fortunate to have her talents in “Dixie Swim Club.”
Plan to see Sarah and her castmates perform on the big stage of the Sampson Community Theatrebeginning Feb. 21. The show is being sponsored by Owens Furniture.
In just two weeks all playgoers are in for a treat when. On Thursday Jan 30 at 7:30 p.m. there will be free admission to a program presented by Lee Howard called “Come Fly With Me” where Lee will entertain you with an hour or so of storytelling done only in her unequaled humorous style. You will not want to miss this program as it promises to make you laugh and perhaps cry, and you certainly cannot beat the admission cost.
2014 Patron Sponsor tickets are now available for a donation to the theater. These consist of two complimentary tickets to every show we produce in 2014. Contact any Board Member to obtain yours and be entertained all year. Thoughts until next week:
• They think too little who talk too much.
• You are today where your thoughts have brought you, you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.
• The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short: but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.
