Recently, the Harrells Christian Academy sixth-graders thought they were hearing things when math teacher Julie Ellis told them they were going to have their math lesson on the football field. Nevertheless, they scurried quickly outside, excited about what was in store.

As they were all huddled together on the50-yard line, she explained that they were going to be learning about integers while playing football.

The curious students listened as she continued saying, “If the team gains yards, then the team gets points, but if the team loses yards then the team loses points.”

To help with the game, Mrs. Ellis enlisted the help of Dasmine Joyner, an HCA senior football player.

Mrs. Ellis shared “I asked Dasmine to join us because he is a positive role model to the younger children and because Dasmine loves the game of football.”

The true purpose of this game was to give the eager students an example of how add and subtract positive and negative numbers. Not only did they master the concept, but also had a great time doing it.
