Jared Best, a Nation Ford graduate who is now junior at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., is a member of the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps, which won its first World Championship on Aug. 10.

Best, son of Allen and Julianne Best of Ft. Mill, S.C. and grandson of Joyce P. Hill of Clinton, toured with Carolina Crown as part of the percussion section for the first time this summer and was part of the World Championship win.

He was quoted in the Fort Mill Times as saying the win was “absolutely awesome.”

Carolina Crown has 150 members between the ages of 17 and 22. The nonprofit organization brings students from all over the world to auditions each year to be a part of the corps, which tours throughout the summer, rehearses during the day, competing in the evening and traveling overnight.

The group won the World Championship with a score of 98.30

Carolina Crown has spent the summer touring and competing in California and recently returned to the East Coast to finish out the summer. In a competition back in July in Salem, Va., the Crown took home a win against the 15-time World Championship Blue Devils.

Best is a music education major at Furman. Because of his music scholarship he must participate in marching, concert and percussion ensemble. He does, or has played with Big Band, jazz combos and the Furman orchestra. He has also played with a faculty ensemble during the semester faculty recitals.

He is now working with the James F. Byrnnes High School Band as a front ensemble instructor.

Best will play with the Carolina Crown in the national broadcast of Disney World’s Christmas parade on Dec. 7.

The young man has also had the opportunity to perform with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra at the Peace Center in Greenville, S.C.

He was also selected this past year to perform at the South Carolina Day of Percussion Intercollegiate Honor Ensemble.

Best graduated from Nation Ford High School in Fort Mill, S.C. where he was a member of the band all four years, a band which won the 2A and 3A state championship titles and placed as runner-up in 4A competition.
