KENANSVILLE — James Sprunt Community College’s annual Convocation in recognition of Community College Month will be held on Tuesday, April 29, at 3 p.m. in Monk Auditorium on the JSCC campus. This event also highlights the success of the college during the past year. A reception will be held on the grounds immediately following the event.
Donors to James Sprunt Community College Foundation in 2013 will be recognized during the ceremonies. The event is open to the public.
Betty Ray McCain, a native of Faison, and former North Carolina Secretary of Cultural Resources, will be the keynote speaker. In 1993 Gov. Jim Hunt appointed Mrs. McCain to Secretary of the Department of Cultural Resources. She was re-appointed in 1996 and served in that capacity until 2001. In 1987, Mrs. McCain was elected to the UNC Board of Governors and was re-elected in 1991. Mrs. McCain is active in the Democratic party having volunteered for Terry Sanford’s gubernatorial campaign, and served as co-chairman of both of Jim Hunt’s gubernatorial campaigns. She continues to work for the state on both UNC-TV’s Board of Trustees and the Board of Visitors of the Lineberger Cancer Center in Chapel Hill. Mrs. McCain received the North Caroliniana Award in 1996 and 2006, the Design Guild Award, NC State College of Design in 2001, and the North Carolina Award for Public Service in 2009.
