After 18 years of helping families and serving the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Brenda Reddick is saying goodbye.

The parenting counselor for the Duplin County center was recognized Friday afternoon by fellow extension agents at the Clinton Ribeyes Steakhouse.

She began working with the Cooperative program in the 1990s as a parenting educator for the court system.

“I love helping people and making a difference within families,” Reddick said.

Former extension director Wanda Campbell Clay attended the gathering and had kind words to say about Reddick.

“What we would find out is that the parents referred to us didn’t understand the normal stages of development that children go through,” Clay said.

Clay said the parents did not know how to handle conflict and would often abuse the children. School counselors would also communicate with Reddick about issues.

“Over the years, her caseload probably ran about 35 families a year,” she said. “She really has educated parents of all nationalities on how to be better parents and how to discipline. She taught how to teach positive parenting without physical punishment.”

Reddick grew up in Rose Hill and, after high school, she earned a sociology degree from Fayetteville State University. She is married to David Reddick and has two children. Her son Delano Savage is a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and her daughter Tiffany Savage is a school teacher in Duplin County.

Although Reddick is retiring from Cooperative Extension, she plans to continue her work through parenting consulting, she said.
