It’s time to stop being silent Christians
by Becky Spell Vann Contributing columnist
Do you live with fear or courage? Watching and reading news reports would make most anyone cringe in fear these days. Bad news permeates the land through every means of media. Live coverage, reruns, and written reports highlight murder, madness, corruption, and crime all across God’s creation. Every corner of our world is saturated with sinful, sad news that dominates what we watch and read.
Why not share the good news? There is plenty to tell, but it only gets one to two minutes at the end of nightly news or filler space in many newspapers. If we would stop reading materials and playing games that highlight violence, stop watching television shows that make sinful living seem OK, stop being silent Christians, and start: praying, fasting, and seeking His way… things would change. Why do we flock to movies with vulgar language and scenes that promote sinful living and fear? When we take a stand in unity, refusing to spend our money and time watching violent, vulgar, sadistic scenes — where God and righteous living are ruled out - television producers, newscasters, and moviemakers will get the message and change will come. We, the people, have more power than we realize. God empowers us to do all things when we trust, obey, and get off the fence of lukewarm living. Fearful living is replaced with contagious courage when we keep God first and let Jesus reign in our hearts and homes. He is the good news. Do we have courage to share it and live it out loud in love? Now is the time for all believers to come to the aid of our country. Stand up with courage and let the good news roll.
Good news is circulated in our city and county through many sources. How fortunate we are to pick up the newspaper and read refreshing, ‘good news’ stories. Hats off to the courageous writers, supporters, and readers who keep the spirit of the Lord alive and well in Sampson. Thank you to business owners who support church and local ministry activities with sponsorships. Throughout our city and county, churches dot the countryside with steeples that touch the sky and activities that keep the sheep ‘on the go’ for God. Proudly displayed in yards across our county and city are beautiful crosses and colorful signs that proclaim God’s love! The Sampson Independent provides readers a weekly Faith and Family section where the good news of what’s going on in our churches and stories from locals who love the Lord fill each page. I praise God that our little corner of the world has no fear sharing our faith and proudly proclaiming our love for Christ.
Billy Graham has preached and lived courageously; his Christian spirit of love and leadership has blazed trails for good news to be broadcast throughout our world for over half a century. His last sermon is coming soon. Living out his last days in his mountain home in North Carolina, he still yearns to share the good news of living connected to Christ. His message should be shared on every front page and news show throughout our land.
Mr. Graham’s words on courage inspired me to write this story. “Down through the centuries in times of trouble, temptations, trial, bereavement, and crisis God has brought courage to the hearts of those who love Him. The Bible is crowded with assurances of God’s help and comfort in every kind of trouble which might cause fears to arise in the human heart.”
If we love Jesus, we are given help, comfort, and courage to face our fears. While bad news and tough times knock us down daily, we have the choice to get up and keep on going and going and going like the Energizer Bunny or give up, cowering in fear like those who would not face Goliath. With courage, we must face our fears and stand up for righteous living. There is no other way to be happy in Jesus…than to trust and obey.
Next week, I will finish this fear to faith story. Until then, ponder on what fears you deal with in your life and how blessed we are to live in a place where people share their love out loud for the Lord. While driving through our beautiful city and county, watch for those precious signs from a powerful church … “Give Thanks for God’s Love”!
While falling leaves and cool weather remind us of the changes a new season brings, let us thank God for His love, protection, and guidance through all the seasons of our lives.
