Like many of you, we have been trying to figure our health insurance coverage for next year. While certainly not the fiasco of the Obamacare website, working through the Blue Cross and Blue Shield website on the computer is not easy and is time consuming. With all the uncertainty healthcare coverage, we’re concerned about what’s eventually going to happen to our state employee health care benefit. I’m sure many of you share concern about your employer health benefit, as well as the future of other employee and government benefit programs.
Over the past few years, many employees have seen changes in their benefits, and others have seen their employee benefits eliminated all together. Government entitlement benefit programs, such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are all facing, or will eventually be facing, necessary changes inorder to keep the programs solvent.
So many are asking, “What’s going to happen to my benefits? Will my benefits even be there in the future?” Maybe that’s the wrong question. Maybe the question should be, “Am I putting my trust in the wrong provider of benefits?”
Psalm 68:19 in the Bible states, “Blessed be the Lord, who daily loads us with benefits, the God of our salvation!”
Daily loaded with benefits! Hey, I want to get hooked up with that provider!
But what exactly are those benefits? Let’s look at some of them and where they are in the benefits package book, the Bible. Medical. “Who Himself (Jesus) bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.” – I Peter 2:24
Financial. “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19
Security. “The Lord is good, a refuge in time of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.” – Nahum 1:7
There are many more benefits which are “loaded” daily for those who are covered by the Provider.
During my teen years, I would help my father who was in the fertilizer business during the summer. When a farmer would come in wanting fertilizer, often he would tell them, “Just go around and back your truck up to the door and we’ll load you up.” And that’s what we would do.
To me, that’s a visual picture of receiving God’s benefits. To get His benefits, we must first become a part of the benefit program. In other word, become a Christian. Then we have to let Him load us with those benefits. Many good people fail to back up to God’s loading dock daily and receive His many benefits.
Many are worried about the future of their benefits. I read recently that Social Security may have problems meeting obligations and be in trouble in as soon as six years from now. Let’s see, that’s when I turn sixty five years old. It figures. So there’s not a lot of future security in Social Security. Many people have seen their company pensions and their 401(k) plans wiped out during this recession. These are shaky times. But if you are partaker of God’s benefit package you can say, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer.” (Psalms 18:2) And unlike other benefit programs, God’s program doesn’t stop at your death. It’s only just beginning, with the greatest benefit of them all, eternal life.
So the question is not, “Can I trust the future of my benefit program?” It should be, “In what benefit program am I trusting with my future?” And maybe if I spent as much time checking out God’s benefit program in the Bible as I do trying to figure out the new health insurance coverage, I might not be so concerned.
