Since today is Thanksgiving, I thought would talk about some of the many things that I am thankful for. My list may be atypical, but I think it is symptomatic of a 33-year-old kidney transplant patient in graduate school, but I admit it’s strange anyway.
For starters, I am still grateful for the things I mentioned a few years ago: the Turkey Fire Department’s chicken fundraising, my goat bobble head, my family and friends. Of course, I have a few other things to add to my growing lists of things to be grateful for.
I am also thankful for People Magazine and its annual Sexiest Man Alive issue. It comes out every November, and I enjoy that issue. One of my little known talents is my ability to recite the names of all of its recipients in chronological order. I am also grateful to all the wonderful souls who have allowed me the opportunity to prove my talents. It is a rare individual who wishes to hear me tell exactly when Harry Hamlin was named Sexiest Man Alive.
I am also grateful to Neil Simon for writing “The Odd Couple.” If it weren’t for Neil Simon, I wouldn’t have auditioned for the local production of “The Odd Couple: The Female Version.” Years later, I benefited greatly from this play when not one but two people involved in this local production offered to give me their kidney. Of the two, one ended up being the match I needed. So, thanks Neil Simon for writing a play that led to my life being saved.
It would be wrong of me if I didn’t thank the inventor of those Keep Calm posters I see everywhere. After all, I need those reminders. We all need to hear “Keep Calm” since there are so many times when stress becomes a problem. I just think “Keep Calm,” and I go watch a movie starring a “son of a newsman.”
Lastly, I am thankful for the seat warmers in my mom’s Expedition. When it is really cold outside, there is nothing better than a great seat warmer when you’re taking any kind of trip. It is exactly what I would love to have in my own car. Well, maybe when I am out of graduate school, I can get another car, and I will make sure it has a seat warmer.
So, there they are — four more things I have to be thankful for. I can add these four to my list including the goat bobble head and the Turkey Fire Department barbecue chicken fundraising meal. Of course, I have a much longer gratitude list, but I think Thanksgiving is the best time to bring out the oddest things I am thankful for.
