Lakewood goes five against Pender
Ruthie Pope Sports Writer
It was a hard-fought five-rally match, but the Lady Leopards just couldn’t pull off the win and lost to Pender 19-25, 23-25, 25-23, 29-27, and 7-15.
The Leopards pulled back to tie the score in the second game to 23-all before Pender got the two key points to win the game. Using that momentum, Lakewood was able to keep the third rally tied throughout most of the scoring. A great block by Rashyda Parker pulled the Leopards ahead at 24-22 and they were able to win it.
In the fourth game, the Leopards played catch-up for the most part until the scored tied at 24-all when the Patriots hit the ball into the net. This started a series of miscues by Pender and Lakewood was able to finally pull ahead by 2 points and win at 29-27.
In the final rally, the Patriots came out ready to get the job done and go home. Pender jumped to a 2-6 lead, then moved up to 3-10 before the Leopards could rally the score back to 7-12. That would be all Lakewood would score in this final set, as the Patriots won it and the match.
Lakewood stats credited Rashyda Parker with 14 kills, 2 aces, 4 blocks, 7 digs, and 3 aces; Kiara Rich, 12 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks, 2 digs, and 2 assists; Alyssa Horne, 3 aces, 2 kills, 6 digs, and 4 assists; Amanda Kook, 3 kills, and 18 assists; Anna Heinz, 1 ace, 17 digs, and 6 assists; Emily Lewis, 1 ace, 2 kills, and 16 digs; and Bianca Boone, 2 kills, and 5 digs.
This moved the varsity Leopards’ record to 1-1 in the first week of the new volleyball season. Pender is also at 1-1.
Lakewood had a schedule of non-conference games this week, defeating Clinton, losing to Pender, and traveling to Union today (Wednesday). The Leopards next game is Monday at Clinton, and then they start their conference schedule by hosting Spring Creek on Tuesday. JV game time is 4:30 and varsity plays at 6 p.m.
