The Clinton Dark Horse men’s soccer team was scheduled to begin their season on Wednesday night, but mother nature had something else planned. As both Clinton and Whiteville were warming up for the game, clouds formed over the field, followed by thunder, lightening, and loads of hard, cold rain.
Players, parents, and fans headed for the parking lot instead of the stadium when the game was supposed to begin. The game, which was non-conference, has been cancelled.
Earlier, Clinton’s head coach, Brad Spell, talked about his high hopes for the upcoming season.
“This year is going to be a new phase, because our school is now in a brand new conference. We’ve lost quite a few seniors, but our team now has 12 seniors, and 14 freshman. So we pretty much have a whole new team this year, and that will come with some challenges. Overall I’m very excited for this new year,” said Coach Spell.
Clinton ended the 2012 season with a record of 15-5-2, and made it to the East Regional Championship. They graduated 15 seniors and moved to the Four County Conference (FCC) that includes both 1A and 2A teams; Union, Pender, Trask, Wallace, Midway, East Bladen, and West Bladen.
The Dark Horses will travel to Maysville this weekend to play in the Battle at the Beach soccer tournament. They meet Croatan at 4 p.m. on Friday and Dixon on Saturday at noon.
