In a desperate battle for the fifth set, the Lady Spartans fell to West Bladen in a barn-burner of a volleyball game.

Union came out blasting and took the first set 25-22, but the Knights woke up and won the next two sets, 13-25 and 16-25. It looked like the fourth set was going to be much of the same when the Spartans got down 5-12, but a timely time-out put the Big Red Machine back on track. The Knights managed to get to break point at 24 while Union only had 17, but the Spartans managed to hold West Bladen and scored an unbelievable 9 consecutive points to win by two, 26-24.

This forced a 5th set and once again Union was down as the Knights sat on the verge of winning. The Spartans scored 4 points in a row to tie the game at 15-all. Then West Bladen took a collective deep breath and scored two more points to win the game and the match.

Despite the loss, Spartan head coach Matt Russell was very pleased with the way his team played.

“This is the team that went 0-14 last year. They fought hard today and will be a very tough opponent this season. There are only three seniors on this team that played last year,” Russell explained.

He said the team had very little structure last year and he has changed the entire culture of their practices, which he believes is already paying off in the way the team is playing this year.

So far, Union’s record has improved from last year to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The Lady Spartans will travel to Trask on Wednesday and then host Wallace on Thursday.
