A 4 touchdown opening period by the Midway Raiders Friday night spelled doom for the visiting Eagles from Rosewood. Midway won the game 51-14.

The Raiders received the opening kickoff and began play on their own 34 yard line. They drove to the 3 and quarterback Taylor Calcutt ran it in from there for the game’s first score. Baltazar Barajas added the PAT and it was 7-0 with 8:17 left in the first quarter.

Rosewood started on their 20 and went 3 and out. An Alex Brogden punt put the Raiders on their own 49. On the first play, Cody Baker sprinted 51 yards for another Midway touchdown. At the 6 minute mark, it was 14-0.

The Eagles, after a touchback, started on the 20 and went 3 and out again. Punter Brogden got a bad snap, but was still able kick to the Rosewood 41. This time, on the second play, Calcutt scampered 38 yards for the 3rd score of the period. After the PAT, it was 21-0 with 3:39 still to play in the first frame.

Rosewood fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Midway recovered and took over at the Eagles’ 21 yard line. On 3rd and 12, Jeremy Robinson broke loose from 23 yards out, giving the home team a 28-0 lead with 2:37 left in the first quarter.

The Eagles got on the board with 35 seconds left in the half. After a botched Midway punt, Rosewood had taken possession at the Midway 14. Brett Jones scored from the 1 and the extra point made it 28-7.

A Rosewood penalty and a strong runback by Justin Thompson landed the Raiders at the Eagles’ 22. The Raiders used their timeouts and then Barajas nailed a 26 yard field goal to make 31-7 at intermission.

Jamari McGown broke through for a 22 yard touchdown run on Rosewood’s first possession of the 2nd half. With 8:33 left in the 3rd, it was 31-14.

Early in the 4th period, Jordan Thompson hit pay dirt on a 19 yard run for 38-14 lead. Four minutes later, Robinson ran 79 yards and it was 44-14. The game’s final touchdown was by Jordan Killet who found the end zone from 22 yards out.

“We played pretty good and we blocked pretty good,” remarked Raider running back Robinson, “We came out with confidence and that’s how we played.”

“Rosewood played good in the second quarter, but we wore them down a little,” asserted Raider head coach Tommy Sloan. “Our defense got a couple of stops on them but they’ve got some good backs. I enjoy playing them. It’s always a good hard-fought game.”

Midway improves to 3-0 while the Eagles fall to 1-2.

Offensively, Robinson led the way for Midway with 7 carries for 141 yards. Baker toted 6 times for 70 yards. McGown ran 13 times and tallied 79 yards to lead the Eagles.

Tyler Pope caught 1 Calcutt (1-5) pass for 21 yards, while Eagle quarterback Jacob Sasser was 7-19. Cameron Godwin had an interception for the Raiders.

Midway outrushed Rosewood 414-129.

On defense, Luke Clark had 8 tackles followed by Collin Warren with 6.

The Raiders will host Lakewood next week for the last of their non-conference games.
