Clinton High’s star center Thaxter Spruill has signed with Cape Fear Community College for a full-ride to play college basketball. The Sea Devils will be gaining one of the top defensive players in the state in Spruill and a great athlete. Spruill was known throughout the county as a great shot blocker and rebounder, and should make an immediate impact in Wilmington.
Cape Fear’s head coach Ryan Mantlow said the things that drew his eye to Thaxter was his raw ability. He also mentioned how great it was to watch him develop as a player throughout the course of the past year. “Here at Cape Fear we’re all about bringing in the right kids. We want kids with a good demeanor and a great attitude, and that’s what we’ve got with Thaxter,” finished Mantlow.
Spruill was a part of 45 wins over the past two seasons at Clinton. Clinton’s head coach Randy Jordan expressed how much they would miss Spruill both as a person and a player. “He’s been a real pleasure to coach,” said Jordan. “He is just a great kid and I think he has made the right decision for he and his family. I always loved coming to practice and seeing that smile he has that is as wide as he is tall. We’ll miss that,” finished Jordan.
When asked why he chose Cape Fear, Spruill said that he wanted to go somewhere where he could make an immediate impact and continue to grow as a player. “It is a good place for me to start and continue to grow as a player. I would like to continue to improve and just work my way up,” said Spruill.
The 6’9 center will add length and energy to the Sea Devils’ lineup. The decision seems to be beneficial to everyone who is a part of it.
