The Sampson County Soccer Club’s U16 Clinton United boys soccer team travelled to Greensboro over the Memorial Day weekend to compete in the Wrangler/McDonald’s Youth Soccer Tournament. This was the 35th year for the tournament and more than 250 teams from all over the East Coast of the United States competed in various age and skill divisions.

The Clinton United boys won the U16 gold division in exciting fashion. Clinton United defeated teams from Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh while tying a Cleveland United team. When the weekend ended in a tie between Clinton United and Cleveland United, the tie was decided by a shootout. Each team was allowed to attempt 5 shots on goal in a one-on-one fashion with the goalie.

Clinton United’s goalie, Gray Sutter, stopped all of the attempts by Cleveland United, while Jair Sanchez, Spell Carr and Andrew Warren scored for Clinton United to seal the championship.
