Shyquan Brunson is a rising junior at Union High School. Although he plays other sports, football is his favorite.
“I’ve played football all of my life. My family loves the sport and loves to watch me play. It is really a lot of fun and I love it,” said Brunson. Brunson plays running back and safety for the Spartans, and is a big part of their special teams as well as sharng the return role last year with star Dezmond Faison.
Brunson wears No. 3,in honor of Trent Richardson, his favorite football player. Brunson said that Richardson is his favorite player because he runs hard and is a leader on and off the field. Brunson aspires to be the same. Richardson is a current member of the Indianapolis Colts, and won two BCS National Championships at the University of Alabama in 2009 and 2011.
Brunson not only enjoys playing football at Union, but loves the overall experience of being a Spartan. “I love the school spirit and the buzz about sports around school and in the community. I l0ve the Spartan fanbase and all of my teachers and coaches. They have always been great to me and wanted to help me do my best,” said Brunson.
Brunson says that the best part of his game is speed and always being able to run hard. He said if there’s anything he needed to work on, it’s his cuts when he’s running routes.
The hard-running Spartan said his most memorable game was when they played at Princeton last season, and lost by a point in the 42-41 decision. He said that it was easy to remember seeing the would-be game-winning field goal slide past the upright, and the long ride home after the loss.
He said that his goals for the year were team-oriented. “We want to be better than we were last season. More than that, we want to win conference, and we want to go to the state championship. We just need to focus on one game at a time and take care of our season that way. I am really looking forward to this season,” said Brunson. “I love having the football in my hands and I want to have more touches this year.”
Bunson will be the man in the backfield for Union this year. Following Faison’s graduation, Brunson will likely be turned to as the starting tailback. He will have big shoes to fill, but Brunson has the will and want-to to do it. The Union coaching staff has been excited about Brunson’s ability and raw speed for the past two seasons. Now, it is his time to shine. He and the Spartans are set to kick off their season in the annual Pigskin Jamboree at Union High School in a few weeks. The Jamboree is set for August 15th.
