While addressing the importance of the 2016 general election at a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation event recently, President Obama declared, “ If you care about our legacy, realize everything we stand for is at stake. All the progress we’ve made is at stake in this election. My name may not be on the ballot, but our progress is on the ballot.”

These last few months of the 2016 campaign season has given the American people an opportunity to assess which candidate and party will move America in the right direction, making us the kind of country we want for generations to come. And it has become abundantly clear to me that Secretary Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party will do a better job in bringing our country together to renew that passion for justice, that will keep us moving forward. We need to continue building on the advances made by President Obama, ensuring that America will continue moving in the right direction in its pursuit of fairness, justice and equality for all Americans.

In becoming the nation’s first black president, Mr. Obama took office thinking about the future of the country and the American people, believing that any change should broaden opportunities for all. With that said, I will oppose any attempt to destry or minimize the legacy of our black president, and that appears to be exactly what the Republican candidate for president, Donald Trump, wants to do. For nearly eight years, he and the Republican leaders tried to destroy President Obama and failed. In recent remarks, the President stated, “There’s another candidate whose defining principle, the central theme of his candidacy is opposition to all that we’ve done.”

Therefore, for the sake of America, it is my firm belief that we need to make sure Hillary Clinton becomes our next president. She has that “can do” spirit, wanting our economy to work for everyone, not just for those at the top. Reflecting on her experience and background, it is clear that Clinton will bring a lot to the table and the White House that will help us with the many challenges we will face as a nation. Additonally, she will be better able to create the national climate that will allow us to come together and work together, realizing that “progress comes from other choices we make together.”

Again, with the general Election Day just two days away, there’s really too much at stake for you to stay home. Make this your chance to help define the future of our country by exercising your important civic responsibility of voting. We must never forget that many people sacrificed a great deal, even death, for our right to vote. So, your vote does matter as it might be the one that tips the scale in bringing about positive change and for advancing justice.

Tuesday, the choice is clear. Let’s vote and help preserve the Obama legacy, while moving America forward.
