Despite a solid defensive showing, the Union Spartans fell on the road to East Bladen Friday night 60-48.

But Spartan coach Tim Pope said he saw promise in his team in their first outing. “We were a little stagnant out there, but overall I thought our effort was good. I was especially pleased with the way we played on the defensive side of the ball.”

But East Bladen got the upper hand early and really never looked back. The home team was up 10-8 after the first period, added 16 more to hold the lead 26-21 at the half and put up 20 more points in the third to take a commanding 46-32 lead after three period.

East Bladen’s Jaqan Jones led all scorers with 20 points.

For Union, Brandon Lovette had 11 points and Vakeem Murphy had 9.

Union hosts North Duplin Tuesday night.
