As we start this New Year, there are so many challenges; let’s face them with strength and courage. Daily we need to release stress.

My seniors seem ready to get back to the Garland Center. I think I am ready to get back in the saddle and strive for a successful 2013, myself. We invite all old and new clients to join us at the Garland Senior Center. My mind is running away as I think of all the things planned for the new year — programs, trips, presentations, health agencies, exercise and hanging out playing the Wii. Some program will be new, while others are old, but we are ready!!! Come join us. Computer classes will start in January. A big party is planned for Feb. 13, with Eve Black. Big thanks for being a faithful partner, Mrs. Eve.

A special hello to Mike and Rose — Mike is a fan of my weekly article and often provides encouraging words about Under the Shade Tree. Keep reading Mike, I appreciate it. To Edna Strickland and Delcie Norris, I always enjoy hanging out with you ladies. You always provide joy and motivation for my day.

Prayers go out to all our sick and shut-ins, especially Willie Smith and Edward McCoy. Our sympathy goes out to Mr. SJ Smith and family in the loss of their family member, Alice McCormick. Our prayers are also with you Mrs. Pauline Jacopec. There are so many friends who have lost loved ones during this special season…our prayers are with all of you.

For those of you who asked about the Japanese fruitcake, I made it this year. It turned out pretty good. We enjoyed some old -imey Tom Thumb, oyster stew, sausage and collards. All this brought back memories of Christmases past.

We enjoyed Christmas with our children in Columbia, S.C. and Holly Springs, going to Grandma Eloise’s, and concluded at Gene and Marie’s house.

Let’s look at words to live by for 2013: “It’s not what you get, but what you give.”

Bob Hope once said, “ if you haven’t got any charity in your heart you have the worst kind of heart trouble there is,” so I will end my article with these few last words — love, live, laugh, and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
