ROSEBORO — Mr. Grover Shelton Vinson, 79, of 1472 Andrews Chapel Road, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012 at Sampson Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be held at 7:30 P.M., Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Mintz Baptist Church, 3761 Old Mintz Hwy., Roseboro with Dr. John McBride officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:15 p.m. prior to the funeral.

There will be a private burial at Sunrise Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, Oct. 17.

Mr. Vinson was born on Oct. 1, 1933 in Sampson County, son of the late Grover G. and Nellie Russ Vinson. Shelton is preceded in death by his brothers, John R. and Eldo G. Vinson; and a sister, Vivian V. Spell. He was a member of Andrews Chapel Methodist Church. He actively attended Mintz Baptist Church.

Shelton is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Velma Marshall Vinson; he is also survived by his daughter, Marleen V. Powell and husband, Frank Powell of Clinton; a son, John Graham Vinson and wife, Dawn of Fayetteville; his grandchildren who he adored, Caroline and Dylan Powell of Clinton, Cody Sessoms, Raven and Rachel Smith of Fayetteville; a sister, Dorothy V. Dean of Cary.

Shelton retired after 38 years from Civil Service working as manager of the Supply and Services Division at Fort Bragg. He also retired from the Air Force Reserves with 41 years of service with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. Shelton was a lifetime golfer and enjoyed playing golf with a number of very special friends.
