Willie Harriett, president of Delta Mu Chapter of Sampson County, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, recently reported to the state and internal organization on the work of the local chapter. The organization is a professional honor society for women educators with more than 90,000 members. Established in 18 member countries around the world, the Society defines its mission as promoting professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.

During the past year, Delta Mu members were involved in the following projects:

Beginning teacher support – 60 new teachers in the schools in Sampson County Schools, public and private

Schools in Africa - $300 donated to improve schools in Africa and educate teachers for the schools

Grant in aid - $500 grant for a female student majoring in education

Back pack buddies – food was sent to Hobbton Elementary and Hargrove Schools

According to Harriett, her involvement as president of Delta Mu allows allow her act as leader of an intelligent group of women who make important contributions with their time and talents to education. She says, “The members of this society are active and always atoned to the needs of education.”

Other officers of Delta Mu are Judith Barnes, first vice president; Susan Faircloth, second vice president; Karen Tyler, recording secretary; Luanne Rose, corresponding secretary; and Miriam White, treasurer.

Plans for this year include back pack buddies, grant-in-aid, Schools in Africa, and Beginning Teacher Support. Members plan to attend the state convention April 26-28, 2013 at University Hilton, Charlotte, where they will join other organization members from throughout the state for training and personal and profession growth.
