The Hobbton Wildcats soccer team were knocked out of the NCHSAA State Playoffs Saturday afternoon in a 4-1 loss to Red Springs.

Despite the loss, Hobbton was in the game, going into the half down just 1-0.

Just inside the second half of play, the Red Devils took a 2-0 lead before Hobbton’s Eber Gomez got his team on the board with a pretty goal that kept the Wildcat momentum going.

But just as things were looking up, the Wildcats were brought down.

“Well, I don’t know what happened, but one of my players got red carded and ejected,” said head coach Bryan Martinez. “That seemed to take something out of us.”

Red Spring’s offense saw an opening and exploited it, scoring two more quick goals, putting them ahead 4-1. They never looked back.

“I am proud of my guys and I am proud of me,” Martinez said. “The guys did a good job and got us to the second round of the playoffs. This is my first year as coach, so I thought it was a pretty good season.”

Hobbton’s soccer team should be strong next year as well. “We are not losing many seniors, so we will have a lot of the guys coming back next year,” the coach explained. “It puts us in a pretty good position.”

With the loss, the Wildcats finish their season at 11-8 overall.
