For Sampson County Parks & Recreation, volunteers are important to the programs. Without parents and members in the community willing to volunteer their time, SCPR’s programs wouldn’t have the coaches to meet their steadily rising amount of participants.
For the month of November, SCPR would like to highlight the efforts of the Eastern (Hobbton) District’s coaches, J.D and Jeanine Suggs. The staff of Parks & Recreation nominated the couple because of their outstanding efforts as coaches and volunteers. The Suggs coached the Eastern Explosion 9-12 year old volleyball team for the 2012 volleyball season. The Suggs led their team to an undefeated regular season championship title and second place in the end of season tournament. Not only did the Suggs coach a volleyball team in the Eastern District, they also helped other teams in competing districts, whether it was going to a practice to help out with drills, simply giving a pep talk to the other team before a game, or congratulating them on a job well done after a game.
When asked why they volunteer for Sampson County Parks & Recreation, the couple replied, “We volunteer at the Recreation Department because we enjoy working with the children. Being there to see when a child finally realizes that they can exceed if they try and give an honest effort and seeing their faces when it all clicks into place and knowing that we can help them acknowledge their own ability and to build their confidence in themselves. Also, to help impart to them that winning is not everything. As long as you have tried your best, there are no losers. JD and I (Jeanine) have tried to express to our team this year that a positive and ‘go get it’ attitude is as important as skill level. Our team has far exceeded all of our expectations and has risen to any challenges that we have requested and we are extremely proud of each and every one of our girls.”
They were also asked what their most memorable moment as a volunteer was, and they said: “In the first round of the tournament we were notified that a teammate’s grandmother had passed away and that she would not make the first or second round of the tournament. Our usual rally to start games is to chant ‘boom, boom, pow!’ and the girls suggested we yell out their teammate’s name. To know they were thinking of their teammate in that difficult time truly showed their character. We have a great group of girls.”
Sampson County Parks & Recreation would like to thanks J.D and Jeanine Suggs for all they have done so far for the department, athletes, and parents for a job well done on helping spread the meaning of ‘good sportsmanship’.
