WARSAW — The No. 3 seeded James Kenan Tigers ended the Hobbton’s girls hopes of easing into the second round of the Tri-County Conference tournament Monday, defeating the Sampson team in four sets. Scores were 25-14; 19-25; 27-25; 23-25.

Despite the early round loss, Hobbton’s coaches are hoping to get a wild card bid to the state playoffs, which begin Saturday.

Assistant coach Morgan Farroll said they wouldn’t know until Thursday if they’d get in. “We are hoping we will, but we won’t know until later in the week.”

On Monday, Hobbton, playing in Tiger country, started sluggishly, came back strong, but couldn’t finish. They had lost to James Kenan twice before.

Individually for the ‘Cats, Taylor Bowden had 2 aces, 1 kill, 22 assists and 15 digs; Marcie McLamb, 15 digs; Casey Hobbs, 8 aces, 5 kills; Michaela Wilson, 7 aces, 11 kills and 24 digs; Courtney Phipps, 1 ace, 6 kills, 1 assist and 22 digs; Haley Evans, 5 digs; and McKenna Smith, 6 kills, 1 assist, 22 digs.
