The Midway Lady Raiders hosted the Heide Trask Lady Titans Monday night and played a close contest most of the way. They continued to miss the services of the injured Morgan Tew and came up on the short end of a 44-34 final score.
It took almost four minutes for the Lady Raiders to dent the scoreboard in the opening quarter. However, the visiting Lady Titans were struggling on offense as well. They were leading 3-0 when Midway’s Jada Cannady nailed a 3-pointer to tie it up. Minutes later, a 3-point play the old fashioned way by Amber Poole gave the home team a 6-3 lead. By the end of the period, the lead had become a 2 point deficit as Trask led 8-6.
Scoring picked up by both teams in the second quarter. The Lady Raiders found themselves down 20-12 with just seconds remaining, but baskets by Tess Williams and Haley Beasely cut it to 20-16 at intermission.
In the third period, the home team kept it close, trailing 30-24 at the end of the frame. The Lady Raiders were never able to get any closer. Numerous trips to the free throw helped the visitors claim a 10 point final victory margin.
Poole was Midway’s leading scorer with 8 points. Beasley added 7. Cannady and Jennifer Blackmon posted 6 points each. Hannah Hubbard scored 4. Tess Williams had 2 points and Kaitlyn Jackson scored 1 free throw.
In rebounding, Beasley led the way for Midway with 7. Blackmon pulled down 6, while Cannady grabbed 5.
“Defensively we played pretty well, but offensively we missed a lot of easy shots and we didn’t execute,” asserted Midway coach Jennifer Honeycutt. “Haley Beasley played her best game of the year tonight. Amber Poole came off the bench and stepped up, so 2 sophomores led us tonight.”
The Lady Raiders are 4-13 overall and 3-5 in Tri-County Conference play. After a Tuesday night trip to Wallace-Rose Hill, they will host Lakewood Friday.
