In a tense second half showdown, the Lakewood junior varsity managed to score three times in the fourth quarter to come away with the win against Trask on Thursday. The final score was 38-27.
It had all the makings of a rout with the mighty JV Leopards leading 22-7 in the first 13 minutes of the game, but Trask had other ideas, coming back to within 1 point by the time the halftime clock ticked down.
With about five minutes off the clock in the first quarter, Lakewood served up their first touchdown of the night on a play that caught the Titans by surprise. It was a handoff from quarterback Tyler Morrison to wide receiver Jira Cooper, who then connected with Frankie Faircloth down field, and he easily crossed the goal line.
The resulting kickoff put Trask on about their 2-yard line. The Lakewood defense held strong. On the Titan’s third down Cooper managed to break through the line and bring down the quarterback in the end zone for a safety.
Once again the Titans had to kick off to the Leopards and on that drive Taylor Freeman broke free and managed to weave through the field for a 49-yard touchdown run. Dillion Kinlock ran in the two-point conversion and at 3:54 in the first quarter the score was 16-0.
Trask finally found their feet on the next drive and marched down the field, rushing into the end zone with 30.3 seconds left in the first quarter.
On the very first play of the second quarter, Morrison completed a pass to Roman Leach for their last touchdown of the half. The extra point attempt failed.
Trask went to work on their next drive, faking a punt to get a first down. The next play was a pass and run across the field and into the end zone to bring the score to 21-14 with 9:14 showing on the clock.
Trask scored again at the 4:16 mark with a hand-off at about mid-field and run down the side. The extra point kick was good. At half, the score was 22-21.
The next score would be by the Titans on the very first play of the first quarter. It was a four yard run and the extra point attempt failed. This moved Trask ahead for the first time 22-27.
The Leopards dug in and their offense went to work. With 5:13 left in the game, Leach pushed through on a three yard run to score. A pass from Morrison to Roman King gave them 2 extra points to move Lakewood back in the lead, 30-27.
Another safety was called against the Titans when the Leopards held them inside the end zone at 2:54.
Trask attempted an on-sides kick, but Lakewood got the ball on the 35-yard line and just like they started the game, they ended it. Morrison handed off to Cooper who passed to Faircloth for the final touchdown of the night.
The kick failed and the final score was 38-27.
Leading rusher for the Leopards was Roman Leach with 23 carries for 186 yards; Ray Hayes, 2 for 6; Dillion Kinlock, 2 for 3; and quarterback Morrison 7 for 10.
Passing, Morrison completed 3 of 5 for 56 yards. Wide receiver Cooper completed 2 passes for 53 yards. On the recieving end, Faircloth caught 1 for a 33 yard touchdown and Cooper caught 4 for 76 yards.
Cooper was also leading tackler with 8, plus a safety. Josh Hall had a sack and 5 tackles; Sydney Ivey had 6 tackles; and Roman King and Faircloth each had 4 tackles.
The Leopards are 1-1 in the conference and 3-1 overall. They travel to Midway next Thursday.
