A Burgaw man has found that it doesn’t pay to run from law enforcement, after refusing to stop for a blue light and siren and then leading officers on a high speed chase.
The end result was the arrest of 31-year-old Lee Evans Ennis, 260 Bell Williams Road, Burgaw, on a laundry list of charges, some of them felonies.
According to Sampson sheriff’s reports, the chase began shortly after 9:15 Wednesday, Jan. 9, when a deputy on patrol in the Ivanhoe area noticed a black, four-door Lexus traveling at a high rate of speed on Trestle Road.
The deputy pulled in behind the vehicle and turned on his blue lights in an attempt to stop the driver who, instead, accelerated and reportedly tried to outrun the deputy.
The suspect turned onto Dr. Kerr Road in what officers noted was a reckless manner, reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph, before he turned the vehicle into a driveway and pulled it behind a residence in the 400-block of Trestle Road. Once stopped, Ennis reportedly jumped from the car and tried to flee from the officer, but was unsuccessful in the attempt.
He was immediately taken into custody and charged.
He now faces myriad offenses including felony flee to elude; fictitious registration, possession of drug paraphernalia; careless and reckless driving; and driving without any insurance. He was also cited for speeding 113 mph in a 55 mph zone; reckless driving.l failure to register a vehicle; and unsafe tires.
He was placed under a $10,500 bond and is expected to make an appearance in Sampson County District Court on Jan. 18.
His vehicle was impounded by the Sheriff’s Department.
