Methamphetamine use appears to be on the rise again, with two more Sampson residents now charged with either possessing the substance or trying to sell it. The latest arrests, made following a weekend traffic stop, come on the heels of similar arrests that have been made over the last several weeks involving meth.
On Friday, investigators with the county’s Special Investigation Division arrested Earl Wayne Hodges, 26, 77 Tanner Lane, Autryville, and Charles Anthony Briza Jr., 35, of 99 Tanner Lane, Autryville after a traffic stop uncovered the illegal substance in their possession.
Hodges was charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver meth, a felony.
Briza was charged with possession of meth. An outstanding failure to comply warrant was also issued.
According to sheriff’s reports, the arrests came after SID officers stopped a 2004 Chevrolet Trail Blazer on Carry Bridge Road near Roseboro Friday night around 6 p.m. During a search of the vehicle 2.3 grams of meth were discovered on Hodges — some in his jacket pocket and some in his pants pocket — and 0.1 grams was found in Briza’s pants pocket.
The pair were taken into custody and charged.
Hodges was placed under a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Friday; Briza faces a $25,580 bond and a court date of Friday.
The latest meth arrests echo remarks made several weeks ago by Sheriff Jimmy Thornton who noted that meth appeared to be on the rise again in Sampson, after having waned for quite some time.
Thornton said officers would continue their diligent monitoring of the roads and highways throughout Sampson County, looking for suspicious activity.
“Our SID officers know what to look for and they are out there,” Thornton said in an interview several weeks ago about the sudden rise in meth arrests. “We will not tolerate this illegal activity.
