It wasn’t a runaway when two of Sampson’s volleyball teams squared off against each other Tuesday afternoon, but when the dust settled, Midway had come out on top of Union in both the JV and varsity matches.
Playing on Senior Night in Raider Country, Midway’s varsity came out strong and worked hard to get the four set win — 25-15; 26-24; 13-25; 25-23.
“Overall, I thought they played well,” said Raider coach Heather Johnson. “We had a point there, in that third game, where we weren’t communicating as good as we should, but they rallied in the fourth, came together and played pretty good, and we got the win.”
Individually for the varsity Raiders, Harley Bass had 4 kills, 2 blocks; Jennifer Blackmon, 5 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks; Jada Cannady, 8 kills; Kaitlyn Jackson, 44 kills, 6 assists, 3 aces; Elizabeth McCullen, 6 assists, 1 kill, 2 aces; and Tess Williams, 4 kills.
The junior varsity also played strong volleyball against the Lady Spartans, getting the win in three — 25-12, 18-25, 25-18 — but like the varsity matchup it was no run away for Midway.
“Union’s teams are good,” Johnson said. “They were hitting pretty good, particularly in that second game. They rattled us then, but we were able to regroup and get the win. But, it was a tough, competitive game.”
Union coach Dana Strickland said she was proud of both her teams. “I’m really proud of the girls, “Strickland said. “I really feel like they are getting better and better with each game. There were some things we could have done better against Midway, but overall I didn’t see any reason for us to hang our heads.”
Leading the way for the JV Raiders were Brianna Butler, 4 kills, 1 block; Hannah Hubbard, 4 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks; Kelsey Pondo, 3 kills, 1 ace; Amber Poole, 4 assists, 1 kill; Savannah Spell, 2 kills; Brittany Weston, 3 aces; and Taylor Fann, 3 kills 1 ace.
Midway plays another county rival Thursday when they travel to Hobbton to face the Lady Wildcats on their Senior Night.
Union will face Lakewood. Both games begin at 4:30 p.m.
