NEW BERN — Jeffrey B.Taylor, from the Roseboro community, was appointed as the assistant director for Sudan Shriners. The appointment was made on Jan. 26 by 2013 Potentate Ken Bennett at the annual meeting and election of officers. The term “assistant director” is a ceremonial title given to one of the appointed officers of a Shrine Temple.

Taylor and his wife, Colleen, live in Roseboro and have two children. He works for Piedmont Service Group in Raleigh as an industrial heating & air conditioning service technician. He has previously served with Sudan as the Masonic relations director and sits on the Board of Governors for the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas

Sudan Shriners offices are in New Bern. Sudan is one of the largest of the 195 Shrine Temples with 5500 members. Temples are located throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Panama, Philippines, Germany, and Puerto Rico. Shriners Hospitals for Children is a unique health care system consisting of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research, and outstanding teaching programs for medical professionals. Children up to the age of 18 with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family centered environment, regardless of the patient’s ability to pay.

Sudan Shriners are currently sponsoring 582 children in Eastern North Carolina. Most are treated for orthopedic issues in the Greenville South Carolina Shriners Hospital for Children. However, 31 are being treated for burns at the Cincinnati hospital, 20 for spinal cord injuries in Philadelphia, Pa, three in Montreal Canada for brittle bone disease, and 5 in Chicago and 1 in Houston Texas for pectus excavation or caved in chest. Over $114,000 has been spent by Sudan in transportation of patients and families to the Shriners hospitals. The Sudan Roadrunners, (Shriners who drive the Vans to the hospitals) drove over 160,000 miles and volunteered 1412 hours.
