He may have been driving a tractor, but the plant a Sampson County farmer was caught carrying was the kind that could put him behind bars for a while.
Christopher Ray Johnson, 33, of 400 Pine Loop Lane, Autryville, was pulled over Friday, Sept. 21, around 10:30 p.m., allegedly carrying 13.9 grams of marijuana, .4 grams of cocaine and drug paraphernalia.
Johnson was charged with possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance; possession of cocaine; and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also charged on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court for a DWI charge leveled earlier this year. Johnson was given an $11,000 secured bond and a trial date of Sept. 28.
According to reports, officials from the Criminal Investigations Division responded to a complaint of a man driving a tractor down Autryville Road, just past the North Carolina Justice Academy, west of Salemburg, late Friday evening. When officers stopped Johnson and searched the tractor, they discovered two clear bags. In one of those bags was the cocaine; in the other, the marijuana. Officers also uncovered a smoking pipe.
No injuries were reported in the incident and Johnson was arrested without incident.
According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections, the suspect has a history of convictions dating back to 1999. Those convictions include: common law forgery (June 1999);possession of a Schedule VI and II controlled substances (October 1999); DWI (March 2002); larceny and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia (March and October of 2003); speeding and driving with license revoked (September 2006); and possession of drug paraphernalia (April 2009).
