One Sampson County man has learned that walking down a highway shooting a BB gun can lead to trouble, especiallywhen it leads to drug charges.
That’s exactly what happened to 21-year-old Jonathan Cory Smith, 97 Hunt Lane, Clinton, who was charged earlier in the week with trafficking opium and possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana.
The drug charges came after Smith was spotted by law enforcement officers walking down Rowan Road and firing what E911 callers believed was a rifle.
Complaints were lodged about the man and officers were dispatched. According to sheriff’s reports, filed Friday morning, investigators saw the suspect, later identified as Smith, in the roadway with the rifle, which turned out to be a BB gun. Smith, reports further show, gave officers consent to search him and, later his home.
As a result of that residential search, said sheriff’s Cpl. Marcus Smith, officers found what they believed to be controlled substances, including opium.
In all, 27 grams of a derivative of opium was seized along with 6 grams of marijuana, and Smith was charged.
He was jailed under a $25,000 bond for the trafficking charge and an additional $4,900 bond for the marijuana charge.
In addition to Smith, a woman at the home, identified as Monique Elizabeth Monk, 29, 97 Hunt Lane, Clinton, was cited for simple possession of marijuana.
She is to appear in court on Jan. 30 related to that charge.
Jonathan Smith, reports show, was to appear in court Friday. No details on that appearance were available at press time.
