A 33-year-old Wallace man has been jailed under $23,000 bond after trying to avoid criminal charges by using someone else’s name at a spring traffic stop in Sampson County.
Jason Brent Johnson, N.C. Highway 41, Wallace, is facing myriad criminal violations, including identity theft, after officers took him into custody this weekend.
Investigators were led to Johnson after Duplin authorities attempted to serve arrest warrants on Kater J. Turner of Wallace for failing to appear in court on numerous traffic offenses, leveled during an April 24 traffic stop by N.C. Highway Patrol troopers in Sampson County.
When Duplin officers talked to Turner on Oct. 7, he told them he had not received any such traffic citations.
Two days later, on Oct. 9, Turner filed a report with the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office noting that someone had used his name and other information during the traffic stop on April 24.
Through investigation, it was determined that Johnson was the person who had given the trooper fictitious identifying information which led citations to be issued for Turner. Subsequently, Johnson was charged in Sampson with identity theft and served with additional warrants from the Highway Patrol and others from Harnett County.
He now faces a laundry list of charges: Identity theft; operating a motor vehicle without insurance; driving a motor vehicle without registration or title; driving without a seat belt; providing fictitious information to officers; resisting a public officer;and impersonating an officer.
