The Clinton City Board of Education held a special called board meeting Friday morning to discuss personnel matters, particularly the renewal of principal and assistant principal contracts.

After meeting for about an hour and a half in closed session, the board revealed its decisions, approving Linda Jan Smith, principal at L.C. Kerr Elementary School, to receive a renewed four-year, 12 month contract, effective from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2017.

Smith has 25 years of education experience and has been leading L.C. Kerr as principal for the past two years.

Sampson Middle School assistant principal Jennifer Hill’s contract, a four-year, 10-month contract with the option of a two month extension each year, effective from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2017, was also approved for renewal.

Hill has worked in education for 11 years and has been Sampson Middle’s assistant principal for the past six years.

Likewise, Donna Odum, assistant principal at Clinton High School, was also approved for a renewed four-year, 10-month contract with the option of an annual two month extension.

Odum has 25 years of experience in education under her belt and has been in her current post at Clinton High for two years now.

Following the meeting’s adjournment, when asked if the board plans to move any of the city school’s principals to new schools in preparation for the upcoming school year, assistant superintendent for human resources Nancy Dillman replied, “Today’s meeting was just about contracts. That’s another meeting.”

Two retirements were also noted in the board meeting. Judy Williams, a second/third grade EC teacher at Butler Avenue Elementary, will retire effective May 1, 2013, and Elizabeth Zaccardi, a first grade teacher at L.C. Kerr Elementary, will take her leave effective July 1, 2013.

Many people are not very detailed oriented, however the first sentence of this article states,"The Clinton City Board of Education held a special called board meeting Friday morning....". If someone were to read this article WITHOUT a picture we could probably assume that all board members were present, but to attach a picture with an article that does not show the entire school present scares me. Why call a special meeting if everyone is not present. Unless the other board members opted out of the photograph then I can only assume that they were not in on the discussion of this meeting. At this point in the life of CCS, rule makers should also be example setters. If the time or date forced absent members of the board to miss this "Special" meeting then the correct thing to do would be to reschedule the meeting when it convienent for all. Upon casting votes for these boards members that were in attendance at this meeting, I also voted for two more members which are not present. So now do you look, read and say to yourself just as I did "What are the requirements for attendance at a special called meeting" or "We can just go one without them". If we only had this photo to base opinions on I would assume that the leaders of Clinton City Schools does not always follow rule that apply to all.
