A Clinton man is facing up to 17 and a half years in prison followed by five years supervised release following sentencing late last week on an assault charge by Chief United States District Judge James C. Dever III.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Kimble Dweese Jones, 55, of Clinton, was sentenced in federal court in Raleigh. Evidence presented noted that on Jan. 21, 2011, witnesses watched as Jones began assaulting his then girlfriend outside of a restaurant on McPherson Road in Fayetteville. Evidence showed Jones continued to assault the woman as he drove through the town. An eyewitness, seeing the assault at one point, notified authorities.
Within minutes, officers located and stopped Jones’ vehicle. Upon stopping the vehicle, officers recovered a loaded Winchester Model 24, double-barreled, 12-gauge shotgun under the driver’s seat.
Jones’ criminal history includes breaking and entering, assault inflicting serious injury, second degree kidnapping, discharging a firearm into an occupied property, assault on a female and two convictions of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
A federal grand jury returned a criminal indictment against Jones on July 5, 2011. On March 13, 2012, he pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.
Prosecutors said the case was part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative which encourages federal, state, and local agencies to cooperate in a unified “team effort” against gun crime, targeting repeat offenders who continually plague their communities.
Investigation of this case was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Fayetteville Police Department.
