What started out as a break-in on Pugh Road Tuesday night ended in a multi-county, high-speed chase and the arrest of a Durham man on a string of offenses.
Barry Eugene Helms, 48, of 206 Raynor St. in Durham, was jailed under a $61,900 bond, charged with breaking and entering (Sampson), two counts flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle (Sampson), two counts reckless driving to endanger (Sampson), resisting public officer (Wake), two counts speeding/failing to heed lights/siren, unsafe passing on a yellow line (Sampson) and assault with a deadly weapon on government official (Wake).
Helms was apprehended after leading first Clinton police, then Sampson sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase through Clinton and into the county on U.S. 701 before moving into Johnston and finally Wake County, where officers deployed stop sticks to halt his progress and eventually made the arrest.
It all began around 9 p.m. Tuesday when police responded to a 911 call regarding a breaking and entering in progress at Quality Farm Equipment on Pugh Road.
Callers at the E-911 Center alerted officers on their way to the scene that the suspect had left the business and was being followed back into Clinton by a private citizen until officers were able to intercept.
Police officers attempted to stop the white Ford 150 pickup, but to no avail as the suspect moved onto Southeast Boulevard and out of town on Hobbton Highway, traveling at speeds estimated between 80 and 85 mph. Clinton officers noted in reports that the suspect would appear to be slowing to stop, only to speed up again as the chase headed into the county where Helms is alleged to have passed numerous cars along U.S. 701 in no-passing zones.
Sampson deputies, at another incident in the northern part of the county when the call first came in, picked up the chase near Keener, following the vehicle into Newton Grove, where a Newton Grove police officer joined the pursuit.
The pursuit went into Johnston and then Wake County on I-40. Law enforcement officers from the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office and the N.C. State Highway Patrol assisted with the pursuit and eventual capture of the suspect in Wake.
Sheriff’s officers brought Helms back to the Sampson County Detention Center Tuesday night. He remained behind bars late Wednesday afternoon.
