The 2012 winner of the $400 award is Majesta Lee Young, a Hobbton High School graduate. Young is the daughter of Jeanna Whitman and Martie Young of Newton Grove and has enrolled at East Carolina University. Her intended major is Middle School Social Studies and Language Arts Education. Coharie People elect chief Gene K. Jacobs was elected chief of the Coharie People on Saturday, Aug. 26. The term is for three years. Jacobs is a disabled veteran who served in the U.S. Army and was wounded in the Vietnam War. He is a retired USDA employee and is a member of the Coharie Tribe. Jacobs resides in the Kitty Fork area with his wife of 45 years, Charlene. They have four children and have four grandchildren with two grand-dogs.
