Kirby’s right, bids needed
Being frugal with the county’s money, whether in good economic times or bad, is exactly what commissioners are charged with doing, and it’s exactly what the majority of them did recently when they put brakes on spending $400,000 for a records management upgrade at the Sheriff’s Department. That’s not to say the upgrade isn’t needed; we firmly believe it is and agree that it should be granted. But we, like commissioner Albert Kirby, don’t th...

A view from the polls
After working at the Board of Elections during the One Stop early voting period and at the polls in Autryville on election day, I’d like to share a few observations. And most of them have little to do with politics. First, I can’t remember names. I know your face, I’m familiar with you from church, from my days with Revenue, from my childhood, etc. I know you, but I can’t remember your name. I may have faked you out by saying I needed your ...

Be still and cool in thy own mind
A sassy southern sun brushes the morning air clear of leftover foggy memories; slowly it polishes the sky to a sparkle, nature and time gently merge for another great overture of life. Perhaps the week of Mother’s Day has always been this unique. I know it is forever linked with the memories of the past. Warm, fuzzy, pictures wrap like ribbons round and round in my mind. “Be still and cool in thy own mind and spirit; and from thy own thou...

Kids Walk perfect way to get youngsters involved
There are many aspects of Sampson’s Relay for Life that are special. There’s the Survivors Walk, which brings tears and cheers, usually at the same time; there’s the luminary lighting ceremony that always causes pause as we reflect on those we’ve lost to the disease and those who are bravely fighting through it; and there’s camaraderie shared from tent to tent, person to person as we show the world we truly are in this war against cancer toge...

Kandid Katie
Less than 24 hours ago, the staff at The Sampson Independent enjoyed a wonderful morning. The birds were chirping; the sky was blue, and the sun was bright. And all was peaceful and serene in newspaper land thanks to one thing — the primaries are history. Yes, even though I am no longer a staff member of Sampson County’s only daily publication, I can tell you in detail just what the morning after election feels like. It feels like you have ...

An economic boost
Word that Smithfield Foods is investing more time and money into its Clinton plant, along with offering up a total 160 additional jobs, is welcome news and a tremendous economic boost to both the city and county. It says a great deal about Smithfield’s commitment to our community and its determination not only to continually expand and improve its products but to create new jobs to go along with those advances. And it speaks volumes about t...

Cottle deserves recognition
He may shy away from the limelight and, we are certain, he will blush and profess this editorial should have touted someone far more deserving, but in our estimation, there are few any more worthy of high praise than Billy Cottle. The longtime Progress Energy staffer — most recently in the role as project planner — is retiring from his position after nearly 40 tireless years serving the community. And service was Cottle’s focus. Whether h...

Helms urges support for Rouzer
Dear Editor: I’m Mrs. Jesse Helms, widow of U.S. Senator Jesse Helms, and I feel I should speak out in support of David Rouzer for the U.S. Congress. David worked on Jesse’s Senate staff for seven years. He and Jesse agreed on their conservative principles, and Jesse called David “one of our boys.” Davis was close to Jesse as long as Jesse lived and has remained close to me and my family. I have watched with pride as David has served in...

Please vote against Amendment One
Editor: My family has been proud to call Duplin County home for over 200 years. I was married to my lovely wife for over 50 years. My wife and I are parents to three wonderful children. And I oppose Amendment One. As my neighbors and other North Carolinians head to the polls this week, I have thought long and hard about how to impress upon them the importance of voting against this broadly-worded constitutional rewrite. This is the firs...

Change the Constitution
Editor: Currently there is a marriage law in place (1U.S.C7,1996), however there are three lawsuits against the state of N.C. One such lawsuit is from the Guilford County Register of Deeds challenging the law. This case is currently on appeal. Just one activist judge can declare this law unconstitutional. If that happens and it will if people won’t vote for the amendment, what will happen in our school systems? On Nov. 18th, 2003, it wa...
