Midway Middle wins opener

The Hobbton Middle School Wildcats hosted the Midway Middle Raiders Monday afternoon in the first game of the middle school season. The game was rescheduled from last Wednesday due to wet field conditions. The final score was 40-14, Raiders.

Hobbton Middle had first chance, but didn’t gain very much. Midway took over on the Hobbton side of the field at the 49-yard line. With 4:44 left in the first quarter, Tyler Godwin broke a 40-yard TD run for the first score. Joe Alford scored the PAT on a run to put the Raiders up 8-0.

The Wildcats lost the handle on the ball on the next possession with Midway recovering at the Wildcat 25-yard line. The Raiders were assessed a penalty nullifying a TD run and the lost the ball on a fumble at the 29-yard line with 56 seconds left in the quarter.

The first play of the second quarter resulted in another Raider score after the Wildcats fumbled the ball again with 52 seconds left. Alford scored on a 25-yard run. Godwin scored the PAT to put Midway up 16-0.

On their next possession, the Wildcats were forced to punt the ball from their own 4-yard line. The punt went out of bounds at the 10-yard line giving Midway excellent field position. With 4:41 left in the half, Alford scored on a 10-yard run. The PAT was good on a run to put the Raiders up 24-0.

Hobbton’s next possession didn’t go anywhere again. The Raiders took over at the Wildcat 34-yard line. With 46 seconds left in the half, Alford scored again on a 3-yard run. Godwin’s PAT run made the score 32-0 at the half.

Forty-seven seconds into the second half, Midway scored again on a 45-yard run by Godwin. Alford’s extra point run made the score 40-0. At that point, the Raider coaching staff put the younger kids in to get some playing time and the Wildcats could compete.

With 1:16 left in the third quarter, The Wildcats scored for the first time on a 1-yard run by Alex Martin. One play earlier, Martin got through the defense for a 30-yard scamper before being knocked out of bounds. Quarterback Daniel Britt scored the point after for a 40-8 Midway lead.

The Raider second and third string couldn’t handle the Wildcat offense. The Wildcats scored again on an 85-yard run by Britt on a bootleg play. The point after failed. The game final was 40-14.

On Wednesday, the Wildcats will travel to Union Middle while the Raiders will host Sampson Middle.
