In a penalty shootout, the Hobbton Wildcat soccer team advanced Tuesday night with a 4-3 win over Voyager Academy.

Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie, leading to extra time — two 10-minute overtimes, following which the score was still tied. After the overtimes, the match went five minutes goal-to-goal where the first one to score won. From there, it went in the penalty kick phase, wher the Wildcats were able to hold on.

Christian Vega, with an assist from David Molina, scored for the Wildcats with four minutes left in the match. Voyager scored, tying the match with about two minutes left.

“In the overtimes, both teams had chances but couldn’t score due to excellent keeper play,” said Hobbton coach Jonathan Jacobs. “In the goal-to-goal, you could tell both teams were tired, but they were still giving it all they had. In the PK phase, we scored our first one, they scored their first one.”

“It was a heck of a game,” he continued. “I give high praises toVoyager Academy. They were much better than I was led to believe. He has a young team, so I expect him to have a big year next year.”

The Wildcats will travel to East Carteret for the third round Thursday night.
