Hobbton’s volleyball season began on Tuesday with a varsity win at home against Southern Wayne. The Lady Wildcats swept Southern Wayne, 3-0 to win the match.

Hobbton took the first set 25-20, thanks to a nice set by Madison Bowser. They took set two by a score of 25-22 in a match that was close the whole way. Hobbton seemed to just make a few more plays in the second set, and that proved to be the difference.

Already in control of the match, Hobbton annihilated Southern Wayne in the third set. They won it 25-3.

Throughout the afternoon, Nina Devone and Mackinzie Williams were other standouts for the Lady Wildcats.

“I thought that Nina, Mackinzie, and Madison were all really big for us today. We were really good throughout every set, I thought, and that last set, everything just went our way,” said Hobbton’s head coach Russell Jones. “The second set came down to who made more fundamental plays, and I thought we did a good job of that in that set. I liked the way we did things today, and we will go back at it on Wednesday.”

The Hobbton JV team lost in three sets, by a score of 2-1. They lost the opening set 18-25, before winning the second set 25-19. They came up short in the final set, falling 16-25.

Denise Lamb was a standout for the JV team, especially in the second set when she had 8 consecutive serves, including two aces.

“The JV team played well, and were really in-sync in that second set,” said Jones. “A few plays here or there and it could have been a different outcome.”

Hobbton’s varsity, now 1-0, and JV, now 0-1, hosts Goldsboro High School on Wednesday.
