Hobbton’s volleyball team played their third game in as many games on Thursday when they hosted the Union Spartans in a county match.
Hobbton’s JV team swept the Spartans, and the Varsity team was able to pick up their third win after going the distance against Union.
The JV team won their first two sets, each by a score of 25-22, which was good enough to give them the win. They were led by Arianna Corbit throughout each set, who played at a very high level.
“Arianna came out and had a couple of really good sets for us,” said Hobbton’s head coach, Russell Jones. “We had strong play from our setters and hitters again today, and we are tickled to death to get this win and to now be 2-1 on the season.”
Hobbton’s varsity team got all they wanted from Kristyn Moore’s Union team. After going up 2 sets to none, Union stormed back to win the next 2 sets, to force a fifth and final frame.
In the fifth frame, Hobbton was able to make enough adjustments to win the set, 15-12.
“We had to make some adjustments in the final set, because Union was doing a good job of just sneaking the ball over the net,” said Jones. “It was really throwing us off guard, and we weren’t initially prepared for it, but thankfully, we were able to adjust and come back to win what essentially turned out to be a marathon.”
Hobbton was highlighted by strong play from Camryn Carr, Maddie Rich, McKenzie Williams, and Nina Devone.
“We are very pleased to be 3-0 through the first week of play,” continued Jones. “It was a lot to play three games this week, but to be able to win them all, that’s a good feeling.”
Hobbton is back in action next Tuesday, when they’ll make their first road trip of the year. They are set to travel to Southern Wayne High School.
As for Union, they’ll try to get back on track when they travel to Lakewood on Monday to take on the Lady Leopards.
