Midway made the short trip on Wednesday to Lakewood High School to take on the Lady Leopards. Within that trip came the Lady Raiders’ first win over Lakewood in seven years, as they swept Lakewood by scores of 25-19, 25-23, and 25-23, respectively.
Aleah Parker had 10 kills and 4 blocks to help the Lady Leopard cause on Wednesday. Nyasia James added 10 kills and 6 blocks, Morgan Bonner had 6 kills, Alan Jackson had 17 assists and an ace, and Anna Heinz had 39 digs, 3 assists, and 4 kills.
Lakewood’s head coach Sheila Davidson praised Midway’s intensity. ” Midway came ready to play, they had won a big game last night and they brought the momentum,” she said. “We were flat, and it showed from the start. We had streaks, but no consistency. You can’t let up for four or five points and expect to win against a good team, some of my girls are having to learn this the hard way. We play James Kenan tomorrow, and we will have to play much better, and I know we can.”
Leah Williams led Midway with 24 digs, and Brittany Watson had 22 in a strong defensive effort. Autumn Byrd had 18 assists.
“It was a huge win tonight,” said Midway’s head coach, Jennifer Naylor. “Lakewood not only has a good team, but a great program. We played with a lot of control and confidence. Everyone knew their job and did it well. The girls played for each other today. Our seniors are stepping up, sophomore Leah Williams’ play is so vital to our success, and freshman Alyssa Wrench really is continuing to shine at the net.”
Midway is slated to host Clinton on Thursday, while Lakewood takes on James Kenan.
