Midway’s volleyball team earned a win in the first round of the NCHSAA State Playoffs on Saturday evening, after defeating Bartlett Yancey, 3 sets to 2.
Midway hosted the match, as they were the 16 seed, and Yancey was the 17.
The visitors got off to an early start, and claimed the first set with a 25-18 margin. They looked as if they were about to go up 2 sets to none, but the Lady Raiders played well with their backs against the wall, and won the second set, 26-24.
Midway took the next set by the slimmest of margins as well, as they downed the Buccaneers, 25-23.
In the fourth set, the Lady Raiders looked like a different team, as seemingly nothing would go their way. They got into an early deficit, and were never really able to overcome it, as Yancey took the fourth set, 25-14 to force a decisive fifth.
In that set, the teams looked as evenly matched as possible, as each of them exchanged points throughout the set. In the end, Midway had just enough to take the set, 15-12, and the match, 3-2.
Taylor Faircloth had 6 kills to lead Midway in that category, and Alyssa Wrench, Brittany Watson, Hannah Lucas and Savannah Spell each had 5 kills.
Autumn Byrd had a big night as well as she had 25 assists, and had a hand in many Midway points.
Jennifer Naylor, Midway’s head coach loved the way her team battled throughout the night. “I think we did a nice job when our backs were against the wall. We never backed down, and this is a huge win for us and our volleyball program,” said Naylor.
“Things won’t get any easier now, as we travel to Carrboro, who is the number one seed in our region. They are a really strong team and the team that beat us in the playoffs last year. We are going to do our best to prepare for them, and go up there and compete too. I am so excited about the way our girls played today, though,” concluded the Lady Raider head coach.
