The Midway Raiders ran their record to 2-0 with a victory over Triton Thursday night. The homestanding Raiders led by as many as 17 before winning 71-63.

The Hawks led 9-4 forcing Raider coach Matthew Creech to get an early timeout. Following the pause in play, the Raiders went on an 11-5 run to post a 15-14 lead at the end of the first period.

In the 2nd quarter, Midway went up by as many as 13 on back to back baskets by Austin Raynor. Triton faced a 9 point deficit at intermission with the score 33-24.

It was 52-44 after 3 quarters as Darius Perez and Ayden Canady found their range for the Raiders, knocking down 6 points each in the period.

In the final frame, Midway led 68-51 before the Hawks went on a 10-0 run. Shyheim Small scored the last 6 points for the home team as they finished with a 71-63 win.

Perez led the Raiders offensively with 17 points. Small added 14, while Michael Kramer contributed 11. Marelle Bullock and Canady scored 6 a piece. Paris Smith and Raynor had 4 each. Greg Orr and Jackson Carr both hit a 3 pointer. Malik Sankey scored 2 and Juane Summers added a free throw.

“We are still learning how to close a game out,” attested Creech. “I thought there were several times even in the first half we were on the verge of a big run, and there were little things that would prevent that. I think it’s things that can be fixed with experience and listening to the coaching staff. We’re proud of the way our team stepped up and made plays at crucial moments.”

After a Friday game at Hobbton, the Raiders will host North Johnston on Tuesday.
