Midway’s boys basketball team improved to 5-0 with a win over the Lakewood Leapards at home on Wednesday. The Raiders used strong defensive play to get easy baskets on the offensive end, and won the game by a score of 69-39.

It was a quick start for Midway, and Shyheim Small, Marelle Bullock, and Dariuss Perez all scored transition hoops to give Midway an early 17-10 lead.

Bullock continued to have success in the paint for Midway in the second quarter, and helped them pull ahead by 22 at halftime, as they increased the lead to 42-20.

After leading 56-29 after the third, the home team coasted to the 30 point victory.

Lakewood’s head coach Sylvester Pittman felt his team was a bit complacent in settling for outside jump shots, and that the Midway pressure got to them.

“Their traps really gave us some trouble,” he said. “On the offensive end, we put up a lot of outside shots and were not very patient. We will have to get ready to play the Spartans on Friday.”

Raider coach Matthew Creech liked his team’s play early, but also felt his team got complacent and let off the gas a little in the second half.

“It was a good showing for us. We had some guys do some good things, but I thought we were settling in the second half and getting complacent, which you never really want your team to do as a coach.”

Midway was led by Marelle Bullock with 16 points. Shyheim Small and Dariuss Perez each scored 11. Paris Smith added 7 and Ayden Canady had 6 points for the Raiders.

Lakewood was led by Johnnie Owens who scored 11 points on the night. Jirah Cooper had some impressive defensive plays early in the game, and scored 8 points to add to the Lakewood total.

Midway, 5-0 is set to host Hobbton on Friday night at 7:30. Lakewood is now 1-3 on the season, and they are scheduled to head down 421 to Union for a date with the Spartans on Friday. This game is set to tip at 7:30 also.
